AI Engineer - Genome Diagnostics

Apply

Your role

The Genome Diagnostics section of the Department of Genetics at Radboudumc aims to remain at the forefront of genetic patient diagnostics, with a particular focus on rare diseases. To achieve this, we apply the latest techniques in the field of genetics. We use cutting-edge technologies to study DNA: from advanced sequencing methods to smart algorithms for detecting genetic variants and software that supports their interpretation. Artificial intelligence is increasingly playing a role in analyzing and interpreting genetic information. As an AI engineer, you will play an important role in this.

Our processes are highly automated, both in the wet lab (e.g., controlling pipetting robots) and in the analysis of large volumes of data (bioinformatics) and interpretation of results. Each year, we process several petabytes of DNA data, enabling thousands of patients to receive a genetic diagnosis. We achieve this using the latest genetic technologies and largely self-developed and implemented data analysis workflows.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Develop, optimize, and responsibly implement AI applications in genetic diagnostics workflows
  • Identify where AI can add value in the workflow
  • Stay up to date with the latest AI developments, specifically in human genetics
  • Act as a point of contact within the section for AI applications and implementation questions
  • Contribute to expertise development within the bioinformatics and automation team

What makes this job special?

You will work in an environment where laboratory processes, patient care, complex algorithms, and massive datasets come together. This requires not only technical expertise but also an understanding of underlying processes and the architecture in which solutions are developed.

Your workplace

The Department of Genetics provides outpatient care and diagnostics for hereditary diseases and is one of the largest genetics departments in Europe. Research groups conduct groundbreaking studies on the relationship between genes and disease, particularly in areas such as cancer, hearing loss, blindness, intellectual disability, and congenital disorders.

Within this department, the Genome Diagnostics section is part of an ISO 15189:2012-certified laboratory that delivers high-quality genetic diagnostics for patients and their families. The team consists of over 170 employees and performs more than 30,000 genetic tests annually, covering over 600 genetic conditions using the latest innovative technologies.

The bioinformatics team (15 people) is part of this section and is responsible for all DNA data processing. This includes testing, validating, and implementing bioinformatics methods for new genetic technologies, defining and monitoring quality indicators, and developing new data analysis and interpretation systems. This is done in close collaboration with laboratory specialists and the LabICT team (5 people, software development).

As an AI engineer, you will not only focus on technology but also on integrating it into the primary laboratory processes within an academic environment.

At the Department of Human Genetics, you contribute directly to patient care by working in the outpatient clinic or in the diagnostic laboratory, where genetic, metabolic, and neurochemical analyses are performed. In addition to your clinical and laboratory responsibilities, you support ongoing research projects aimed at improving diagnostic methods and deepening our understanding of hereditary disorders. As a leading, multidisciplinary department, you provide high quality genetic healthcare and contribute to scientific progress.

Your profile

We are looking for an AI engineer who is not only technically strong but also curious enough to quickly immerse themselves in a new domain. Someone who enjoys contributing to diagnostic processes and can bridge the gap between laboratory work and technical solutions. With your insight, you will help translate complex challenges in genetic diagnostics into robust, intelligent, and reliable software.

You have:

  • A university degree in Artificial Intelligence (AI) or a related field.
  • Proficiency in Python and familiarity with ML frameworks (scikit-learn, PyTorch or Tensorflow).
  • Experience building, training, validating and deploying ML/AI models.
  • Hands-on experience integrating LLMs into applications.
  • Preferably experience with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) solutions.
  • Preferably experience with Java 11+.

You fit well in our environment if you:

  • Work independently and clearly monitor both execution and progress.
  • Have your own vision, can communicate it clearly, and remain flexible to team input.
  • Are socially and communicatively skilled—within your team and toward end users.

Our academic and open work environment offers a great deal of freedom: you are responsible for the entire project. We are therefore looking for someone who shows ownership, takes initiative, and is motivated by meaningful work in healthcare.

Good to know
